In other news...

Setting up my new webcam is about all I'm up for today. I got home from work last night and was feeling lightheaded and laid down. I forced myself up and out to get some food, and that was clearly a mistake. I felt better for a brief spell (during which Matras and I took the Xmas tree down, woot), but after not too long, my stomach started to really hurt.

I wound up spending most of the night awake with stomach pain, no good. I took the day off today to rest. My stomach was still hurting at noon, but has now faded into a sort of uncomfortable bloated feeling. Yuk. Considering going back to sleep.

So, a few folks have asked about the cruise I'm going on this year. It's 12 days in the eastern Mediterranean on the Holland America cruise line. You can get the full details via the link above.

Subject:Weight loss help....
Time:11:18 am
Okay, so I've made a number of much healthier changes and choices in my life, and yet, I am still not losing weight the way I want to. I have had a little success - I have lost and successfully kept off about 20 lbs., but I am still nowhere near a healthy weight.

I'm getting very frustrated, and I think I have reached the point where I officially need some help to get it done. I e-mailed a very reputable place in Las Vegas today to see if I can come in and get some price quotes. I'm worried it will cost a crazy amount, but there's no way I'll know until I go there, right?

I would really like to see some improvement by my Sept. trip to the Mediterranean. For some reason, I am really disgusted by the thought of having Europeans see me and classify me as a "fat lazy American" in their heads.

I've stopped biking since daylight savings time hit - it's just too dark for me to feel safe. This has made me feel awful about losing all the progress I'd made with exercise, however. So, the exercise bike is coming back to my house, and I'm going to get back on my routine starting next week. And when daylight savings hits again, the bike is coming back to work.

And to be clear - this is not a New Year's resolution. It's a resolution I made last summer, and I want to rededicate myself to it with the goal of losing at least 4 clothes sizes by Sept.

Subject:Generosity!
Time:09:56 am
I am feeling so blessed and grateful today for all the generosity of my friends and family. I received some really thoughtful and wonderful birthday gifts, and I want the world to know how truly appreciative I am.

Yesterday, Matras gave me that amazing knife set. Later in the evening, the Rock Band crew gave me a combined gift - a gift card to my favorite kitchen/cooking store, Sur La Table. And today, my co-workers are taking me to lunch, and they gave me a really pretty celtic style ceramic shortbread mold - dragons and celtic knots, plus the coolest spatulas ever invented:

I know how truly lucky I am to have such great friends. THANK YOU ALL!

Subject:Sharp things, oh wow!
Time:03:45 pm
Well, my (replacement) birthday/Christmas gift from [info]the_matras arrived today. It made my jaw drop when I opened it. I got it on my lunch hour when I went home to eat.

It's a set of very, very nice kitchen knives. Wustof Classics, for those of you who know knives.

A set of real "grown up" kitchen knives has been something I've been wanting for a very long time. My main set is serrated, which just doesn't get the job done right for most major kitchen tasks. I don't cook enough to warrant the really crazy knives (like the folded damascus steel santuku that my chef friend has), so these are just perfect for a serious home chef. Wow. Just....wow.

I can't wait to make dinner! I wish I had more things to chop!

Subject:Shooting
Time:09:45 am
Not good - there was a shooting this morning at the Las Vegas federal courthouse - which is only a few blocks from my work, and directly related to my own business. We're locking all the doors and gates to the office and having the police come search our building.

Subject:Halfway back...
Time:09:16 am
Well, the staycation is officially over. My week off was glorious and wonderful, and I'm back at work today, though it still feels a little like I'm on vacation since [info]the_matras is still here until Friday.

Say what you will about the heartache and drama and pain of the last few weeks, I have to be truthful and admit it's been really great not being alone in my house. I'm very glad that despite the awkwardness, we were able to relax and salvage a vacation out of it. I'm worried though that as soon as I'm alone again, I'll be back in a bad mental place, but there's not much I can do about it other than be prepared.

New Year's was good. I had a small party - not wild, but fun - we played the jenga drinking game and lit off our own firecrackers and watched the Stratosphere fireworks from my driveway.

New Year's day, I did some chores (laundry mostly), then we had a family dinner at my parents' house. Mom made amazing parmesean crusted chicken and chocolate-walnut cake. Yum!

The day after, my birthday proper, was also good - a rarity for me. I slept in and played WoW in my new super-comfy jammies all morning. Then Matras and I got all dressed up and out to my favorite steak place. We didn't talk a lot - just enjoyed the atmosphere and our food, which was amazing as always. I had an aged ribeye steak with truffle tater tots. OMG. After that, we headed back home and had people over to kill the snacks and leftover drinks from New Year's. Good times all around.

Yesterday was raid day - we woke up early and did our duty for the horde. Raid went long, though, and I didn't get a chance to take the Christmas tree down before folks showed up for Matras's Star Wars one-shot in the evening. Oh well - I'll save that chore for Tuesday. Star Wars was okay, though I think I have a lot more to learn about the game. Need to cuddle up with the rulebook for a few days.

After the game, we watched the 2-hour Iron Chef battle, then Naruto. I wanted to be in bed by 10 for work today, but didn't wind up getting to sleep until after midnight. Oh well - at least I got a little sleep, right?

Subject:2010!
Time:09:45 am
Yeah I never post anything here but private entries anymore, I know. I would like to thank Vanda for like... 8 years ago turning me to this because I've used it in earnest to keep myself sane through so many events. It's also very useful for looking back and remembering how I felt at times since I leave myself a lot of little private notes.

I spent the new years weekend with Vanda and Anthony at their place this year for a change... because well things have changed. They finally have their kid and they're very lucky as far as babies go. He's fairly easy to keep not crying and generally only cries when he specifically wants something which breaks down to sleep... food ... or some attention. Not really hard to solve.

It is interesting to see my friends turn into parents, the changes a baby makes on a living situation is profound. Video game pause features are nigh abused and the couple has to trade off all the time. It occurred to me that children are really the ultimate test of a relationship. If your bonds are not rock solid, the experience will kill what little love between you that exists. It also occurred to me that while this is a commonplace event and reason for divorce, that even in the worst of relationships couples often tough it out and stay together for a while just to makes sure the kid is taken care of. Even in the worst of times, I suppose it's obvious to any observer that taking care of a baby is a ton of work.

Off we go into 2010 with new hopes, dreams and plans. May at least some of them work out ;)

And so, it has arrived - the numerical progression day for years survived. So far, been very low-key, which is what I wanted. Just sitting around in my jammies playing video games. We had dinner with my family last night and I got some neat loot - a whole set of Nightmare Before Christmas hasbro games ([info]farawaypoints, we need to play the Trivial Pursuit!), comfy jammies, some candles and some Halloween stuff.

Later on tonight, [info]the_matras and I are going to Hank's Steakhouse, my favorite place, for dinner, then some people are coming over to join us for cake and drinks afterward. Sounds perfect to me.

But first, I think, another Lush bath.

Subject:Office space...
Time:02:26 pm
Well, I've finally started sorting out the junk I've been piling in the office. My desk is still a disaster, but you can now SEE the FLOOR. It's amazing. I hope to finish it entirely today so that I can relax when I sit in here.

Next up for staycation: Heading to Valley of Fire. Should be a nice quick and very scenic desert drive.

Subject:Thank the gods for the Internetz!
Time:10:00 pm
So, [info]inediblebuddha left this morning for Afghanistan. I'm sort of in a numb-denial about this, but I've been worrying over it for months and the worry will set back in again soon, I am sure. But I'm feeling much better right now, 'cause he's at a place with free wifi and can IM me and get on WoW, so I'm not feeling the separation yet.

I was prepared to not hear from him for days. I certainly wasn't expecting to know he was alright and got in safe the same day. Thank you, internetz gods, for my peace of mind.

Subject:Gracie the Christmas Dog...
Time:08:37 am
Christmas 2009 is complete!

The best story of the day by far is the story of Gracie, the Christmas dog. When I pulled up to my parents' house on Christmas morning, I passed this little chihuahua, sitting on the corner, shivering. She had some sort of blanket-thing next to her, and also was obviously wearing a collar with prominent tags.

I drove past, but endeavored to check on her after I got Tobey inside the house. Leslie showed up a little bit later and said that the dog was still out there, so we went to check. Gracie was very cold, and didn't want to move much when we approached, but she sniffed me and let us pick her up and check her tags - that's how we found out her name.

So, we took her inside and called her owner's phone number, then set her up in the small bathroom, with some food and water and her little doggie sweater.

Thankfully, not too long after that, my mom noticed someone walking by, obviously calling for a dog and looking around worried. We asked him if he was looking for Gracie, and lo and behold - he was! He came in and got her - he shook everyone's hands and thanked us many, many times. I know that if Tobey were lost and someone found him, they'd instantly become heroes in my book, so I was glad we could do it for him.

Good Christmas deed, complete.

The rest of Christmas was okay. I have been an emotional wreck for a while, and I was in sort of a cranky mood the whole day and trying to keep it in check. This was not quite so successful until I had tea and breakfast yesterday, but after that, my mood improved considerably.

My gift-pile was considerable, and mostly consisted of random cooking accessories and cookbooks, plus a lot of Christmas ornaments for next year. I did get a very neat very gothic-looking silhouette painting of an owl, which looks really cool. Gonna hang that up today as part of the cleaning.

Speaking of today - my house is still only half-clean, and that is unacceptable. I did managed to get up at 8 a.m. though, and the laundry's already going. I'm having my tea now while I type, and after that, my goal is to get totally done cleaning before the raid at noon.
